Arsenic In Drinking Water And Well Water Sources...

The Arsenic I am talking about here is not water poisoning by a large dose of arsenic in drinking water, but rather I am talking about the long term bodily accumulation of arsenic in drinking water in small proportions ... building up after an extended period of time.

What is the long term result of exposure to Arsenic in drinking water ...

Being exposed to arsenic in drinking water for prolonged periods has long term negative health effects. Arsenic in drinking water causes cancer of the skin, urinary bladder, lungs and kidney problems. The Arsenic also causes changes in the skin colour and hyperkeratosis (thickening of the skin).

Arsenic is not easily absorbed by the body through the skin and thus taking a bath in water with arsenic does not cause any known problems.

About 200,000 people in Bangladesh are expected to die from diseases caused by arsenic in drinking water according to the World Health Organisation statistics. The arsenic causing this problem originates from water which flows over rocks with high levels of arsenic. It is this arsenic that contaminates the drinking water.

The people in Bangladesh draw their drinking water from wells which have rocks that have abnormal proportions of arsenic. Well water filters cannot filter the arsenic in this drinking water.

The World Health Organization reports...

The World Health Organization (WHO) reports that the equipment for removing arsenic from drinking water in pipes is very expensive and needs technical knowledge. The technology cannot be used in urban areas of third world countries and in the majority of communal areas world-wide. Innovative drinking water treatment technologies such as co-precipitation, ion exchange and activated alumina filtration are still being tested there.

There are no water well filters to remove arsenic from the drinking water from wells, springs and hand-pumps...

There are some filter units available that can remove arsenic from drinking water and people need to learn how to use them. WHO studies report major developments in using packets of chemicals for household drinking water treatment. Other water treatment mixtures combine arsenic removal with disinfection.

An example was developed by the World Health Organization and Pan American Center of Sanitary (PAHO) Engineering and Environmental Sciences in Lima, Peru (CEPIS) and has been successful in removing arsenic from drinking water in Latin America.
