What Are The Aspects Of Labeling And Packaging Bottled Water

Bottled water can be packaged in various materials such as plastic (PET and PVC), glass and aluminum or steel cans. The different packaging materials that are important aspect of bottled water marketing.

In some instances, consumers remember the brand of the bottled water because of the shape and colour of its packaging (e.g.: Perrier).

The bottled water industry is very dynamic - numerous bottled water companies compete in this market.

It is very hard to categorize bottled water. There are three major groups of bottled water companies: Smaller or larger firms that were created to run and market one specific brand of bottled water. The first water bottle was from Evian and entered the market in 1830. During this time the water was being offered for sale n earthenware jugs. Evian was approved in 1878 as a natural mineral water. 14 years later, the city of Evian leased the company the water springs and the casino until 2027 (Evian, 2000).

This enabled Evian to become number one for natural mineral still water. Evian produced 6 million litres of bottled water per day  and sold 12, 1441 million litres in 1999 in 130 countries. The company expanded to Belgium, UK, Germany, USA, Canada and Switzerland.

Evian had a turnover of US$ 500 million in 1999...

Evian had a work force of 1632 people by the end of 1999, having 900 employees at the bottling factory. The company had a turnover of US$500 million in 1999 (Danone, 2000).

The other bottling companies saw this profit and decided to get into the water bottling business. Coca-Cola and Pepsi Co. sell purified water to their already large market.

Companies providing tap water, with extensive know-how in water purification now turn to a more lucrative distribution of water. Suez-Lyonnaise des Eaux and Vivendi, for example, develop water services, such as home and office delivery of carboy water.
