What Is A Tankless Or On Demand Instant Water Heater?

Tankless water heaters are commonly known as "on demand water heaters". Some other people call them instant or instantaneous hot water heaters

An average household in the United States spends about 20% of its yearly expenditure on heating water. The annual operating costs for the common gas water heaters are $200, while those for the electric heaters are $450.

A storage tank water heater uses energy all the time. You do not have to draw water from the storage tank for it to use energy. Because the storage heater keeps water in its storage compartment - it will still need to use energy to ensure that this water in the storage tank remains warm.

The explanation for this is what is called "standby heat losses" in storage water heaters. The heat conducted and radiated from the walls of the tank---and in gas-fired water heaters---through the flue pipe because the exit gases remain hot.

These standby losses represent 10% to 20% of a household's annual water heating costs.

One way to reduce this expenditure is to use an on demand...

One way to lower this energy consumption is by making use of an on demand Tankless Water Heaters, instant or instantaneous hot water heater.

On demand water heaters are popular in Japan and Europe. They began appearing in the United States about a quota of a century ago.

Unlike the ordinary storage tank water heaters, tankless water heaters heat water only as it is used, (or on demand) which means as soon as the tap is opened the heater comes alive. Tankless water heaters need to have very high heat ratings for them to be able to quickly heat the water when the water is needed...

Once activated, the heater supplies a constant supply of hot water. If ttoo much hot water is demanded  the tankless water heater will lower the temperature or flow rate or both ... remember the heater can only deliver a certain amount of energy

You may install a demand water heater centrally or at the point of use...

They come in a number of different sizes for various uses, such as a whole-house water heater or as a boiler to supply hot water for a home heating system. Tankless water heaters can also be used as a booster for the washing machines...

A demand water heaters can be installed centrally or at the point of use, depending on the amount of hot water needed.

For example, you can use a small electric unit as a booster for a remote bathroom or laundry.

For take the following situation as an example: One hot water faucet open with a flow rate of 0.75 gallons (2.84 liters) per minute. One person bathing using a shower head with a flow rate of 2.5 gallons (9.46 liters) per minute. Add the two flow rates together. If the inlet water temperature is 50 F (10 C), the needed flow rate through the demand water heater would need to be no greater than 3.25 gallons (12.3 liters) per minute.

Faster flow rates or cooler inlet temperatures will reduce the water temperature at the most distant faucet. Using low-flow shower heads and water-conserving faucets are a good idea with demand water heaters.

Using low-flow shower heads and water-conserving faucets are a good idea with demand water heaters. Demand water heaters cost more than conventional storage tank-type units.

Life Expectancy of tankless water heaters

Tankless water heaters are very durable and they last over 20 years as compared to storage heater units which go for a mere 10 years.

You can read a wide range of water usage articles. They discuss the use of water in the house and home ... topics covered include filters, heaters, softeners and water in the garden.
