What is a water softener?

A water softener is basically a tank that has an inlet and outlet water connector that has a number of very tiny solid coated plastic beads commonly known as ion exchange resins. Zeolite (which is a complex natural occurring product) can be coated and used in water softener cartridges as an alternative.

How do I know if my water is hard and if I might need a water softener?

When washing you hands with soap and you cannot get that smooth lather then the water is probably hard. If scale builds up in pipes and kettles then chances are the water is extremely hard. Slimy water is normally very soft. Excess magnesium and calcium ions in water create hardness and too much creates hard water as described. You will need a water softener if you are going to enjoy using this water.

Washing using hard water makes is inefficient and as such clothes and laundry generally can look dull and jaded ... and everyone has seen that horrible line of scum around the bath when you empty the bath water.

How does a water softener work?

Easy! The tiny plastic beads or zeolite inside a water softener tank are coated with sodium ions. The contents of the water softener are called ion exchange units. As the water passes through the water softener the sodium ions on the surface of the resin exchange places with the magnesium and calcium ions present in the incoming water , i.e. the magnesium and calcium stick to the surface of the resin and release the sodium.

The sodium ions initially displaced on the or beads in the water softener leaves the unit. When this happens the hard water is said to be softened...it is the presence of excess calcium and magnesium ions (or salts) that makes water hard - thus as water is soft when the concentrations of these substances is reduced.. Sodium does not precipitate like calcium and magnesium salts ... sodium stays in solution and does not affect washing..
