Is Softening Water The Same As Filtering It?

No! Filtering and softening water are two different processes. I will start by explaining the water filter...

The water in the pipes usually contains a lot of water impurities and if you use the perfect water filter you will be able to get rid of most of these impurities.

Chlorine and chloramines make drinking water taste bitter. Chlorine is a chemical that the water treatment experts use to kill bacteria in the water you drink at home. Contaminants include heavy metal such as Copper and Lead,  pesticide residues as well as various petroleum related chemicals mineral elements ... such as Calcium and Magnesium ... which are very harmless but usually result in water pipes becoming blocked.

Besides the possible toxicity or blocked pipe problems there are in fact many excellent sensory reasons to have a home water filter unit installed. Water filters are very useful in the home.

Now water softeners do the following...

Water softeners do not only get rid of Calcium and Magnesium, they do more than this...

But you ask how does a water softener work? ... Simple

Using a filter involves removing tiny particles or chemicals such as dissolved gasses in solution (through adsorption). To be specific home water filters are actually water purifiers because the filter normally refers to the removal of solids only. Water softening involves a process called "ion exchange" which essentially gets rid of dissolved minerals - such as calcium, magnesium at very tiny levels.

Water softeners usually make use of polystyrene resin beads or sodium coated zeolite particles for this process. When the enters the water softener tank, dissolved calcium and magnesium are attached to the resin, removing them from the water supply. Read about how Zeolite works here

The resin beads will become saturated after a specific amount of calcium and or magnesium is removed and at this point needs to be recharged.
